The “Internet of Containers” (IoC) project proposes the implementation of “smart” containers in the Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA S.A.), with the aim of enhancing the digital transformation of the port and its sustainable development at an economic (e.g., provision of personalized transparency and security services along the supply chain, improvement of operations), environmental (e.g., reduction of emissions, energy consumption during container allocation), and social level (e.g., reduction of waste, creation of additional high-skill jobs). Specifically, the proposed IoC platform allows the traceability of the container (display on a digitized map), from its entry into the port areas and temporary storage and control positions, to its placement on the ship and during the voyage, until its final delivery, as well as the digital recording of the results of the container’s inspection.
